Side-by-side units give you the option to purchase a top-loading or front-loading washer. Top-loading washers usually have a great load capacity, but front-loading washers are usually more energy efficient. It has been said that front-loading washers are more prone to mildew and mold growth, so they might take some extra cleaning and maintenance. A benefit to front-loading units is that you can make a countertop above them for folding clothes or storage space. 

If your space is limited, you may need to get a stackable washer and dryer set. The washer always sits on the bottom and the dryer on top. These units are energy efficient. They are generally quieter than side-by-side units. Installation costs are usually greater since the setup is a bit more complicated.
