The kitchen is one of the most important parts of your house. What kind of countertops should you choose? Let’s discuss a choice that has gained popularity in recent years – concrete.
A positive of concrete countertops is that they are durable and easy to clean. They can give an upscale and modern look to a kitchen. If sealed properly with a heat-resistant sealer, you may be able to place hot pans directly on them.
At the same time, there are some cautions. From the beginning, they need to be sealed with a food-safe sealer, and about once a year they need to be resealed. This is because the concrete is naturally porous, so they can be prone to staining and harboring bacteria.
There are some juices that can eat away at the sealer. These include wine, coffee, vinegar, and citrus juices. If any of these acidic juices get on the counter, wipe them up immediately. Otherwise, they may cause stains.
As durable as the concrete is, they are not indestructible. Do not lean heavily on corners or drop heavy objects on them. Also, use cutting boards. It can be tempting to cut right on them, but they can scratch or chip.
