As we mentioned in our previous blog post, people have been spending more time than ever inside their homes. The winter months also mean increased use of a heating system. While cranking up the heat can certainly give you a warm, cozy feeling, there are potential dangers that you should be aware of as well.
Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning can be a real danger for all occupants of your home. It’s odorless and tasteless and can kill an adult person in as little as five minutes, if they’re exposed to a significant amount. One of the most common sources of carbon monoxide is a heating appliance that is not working the way it should be. CO is created by the incomplete burning of fuels. Having a fireplace or other heating element that is not properly ventilated could mean that this toxic byproduct is wafting into your home. Be sure to install carbon monoxide detectors on all the floors of your home, and test them regularly.
